Cable Markers
Cable markersor cable identification is important when implementing your sound and light project. Once your sub contractor pull all the audio, video and signal cable to the rack and the sound mixers and they will usually mark temporary on the cable before our project team step in.
The project team will use the cable marker before they solder the cable with connectors. Just google cable markers and you will find there are many type of marker in the market. The common one is cable tie identification, label printer, slide on cable marker or EC-1 type cable marker.
Before you do this you must have the approved shop drawing or single line drawing showing each line or the actual cable pulling from the which starting point to the which ending point. Transferring this information to the cable marker will ensure that the cable is fully permanently marked.
Cable tie identification come with integral identification plate make of white nylon which can be mark with indelible marker pens. These identifying ties make it possible to fasten and mark cables in a single operation.
Cable label printer is also commonly use where the information is enters into the handheld printer and the printed label will wrap on the cable. Cable markers also include thermal transfer labels, thermal transfer ribbons, tags, and wire wraps.
Slide on cable marker is also commonly used for it is easy to use. It is also called colour coded cable markers or EC type cable markers. It is made from soft PVC and durable that will that will resist oil, grease, acid abrasion and chemicals.
These markers are available in straight & Chevron cut as per international code. It must be fitted before solder connection is made or terminal is attached. It is normally come in 1000pcs and only cost less than RM15 per rolls. You can purchased in any electrical and electronic shop.
The marker will expands to fit various cable diameters and retracts to hold wires firmly in position. The standard comes with yellow body with marking in black ink. Other colour is also available.

UiTM International Center Upgrade their Sound System
UiTM International Center (UIC) in Shah Alam recently upgraded the sound and projection system in their Multipurpose Hall in Bangunan Inovasi.
UIC offer courses for local students as well as foreign students in exchange program and undergraduate and postgraduate study. With international exposal the need to have a proper sound system is needed. According to Prof. Noraida the director of UIC, they wanted to have a sound and projection facility to cater for various student activities and function like seminar and examination. The system has to be robust and easy to use with clarity in term of sound production and video projection. Students will be able to express themselves here as different cultural will require different setup.
The awarded contractor has engaged Artistic Controls as their specialist sound contractor to undertake to implement the sound and projection system in this important venue.
The Multipurpose Hall has been beautifully done on the Interior design so we cannot afford to damage the interior during the installation. One of the problems is due to low level ceiling profile that mean only low profile speaker must be use here to match the overall layout.
To achieve that 4 x Dynacord VL262 Dual 6” Fullrange Loudspeaker is use here together with 2 x Dynacord Sub118 18” Subwoofer. For the power amplifier three Dynacord LX1600 and one Dynacord LX3000 is use to match the loudspeaker system. Overall 90db to 123db SPL can be achieve depending on the set up.
Another important processor use is the Dynacord DSP244 which is an excellent Loudspeaker management for good sound system to the hall. Mixer is by Dynacord CMS1600 Compact Mixer.
With the hall size at 16m x 12m the need of two projectors and two motorized projection screen is use to project to the left and right side. Sony VPL-FX40 is recommended as the image colour is quite natural according to UiTM.
Extron Crosspoint Matrix Switcher is use to distribution various signal like component signal RGBHV and Video Signal to the projector and AV wall panel.
All Audio Visual cabling work is done by using Belden speaker cable and Belden microphone cable and Belden RG59 coaxial cable.
When the staff of the UIC use for the first time during the function in the multipurpose hall they were impress with the sound clarity and evenly sound coverage throughout the seating area. This is one of the important criteria when design the any large or small venue is to have evenly sound coverage inside the venue as much as possible.
The projection is bright and nice to the eye even though without fully dimmed on the hall lighting. The only missing a center projection screen and projector for front row audience as they cannot see clearly to either left or right screen. The problem is solved by using two LCD/plasma TV for the center audience normally seated by VIP people.
Overall the sound is good and once the news is out that the hall is ready to use the hall booking start coming in.
Main System installed:
1 x Dynacord CMS1600
4 x Dynacord VL262
2 x Dynacord SUB118
3 x Dynacord LX1600
1 x Dynacord LX3000
1 x Dynacord DSP244
4 x Sennheiser wireless microphone
2 x Sony VPL-FX40
2 x Draper Screen
1 x Extron Crosspoint

Ho Chi Minh City – A City of it Owns
Apart from attending the Palme Light and Sound show in Vietnam we also took an opportunity to visit the Ho Chi Minh City (HCM) down town and experience the city.
Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon as commonly known is the largest City in Vietnam with the city population of 7 million people.
When in down town we saw lots of motorbike and bicycle rules the street. They are skilful and manoeuvre easily at the traffic light and on the street. Like my friend if they can drive like this here they can drive anywhere in the other part of city.
Ben Thanh Market
The hotel where I stay recommended us to visit the Ben Thanh Market which we did. This is largest old-style market in the central district, with several hundred small stalls stuffed with goods on almost impassably narrow aisles.
I have not seen such big market like this where you can get local foods, fresh vegetable and seafood, kitchen wares and clothing and souvenir items. Most of the sellers seen to know how to speak English, Bahasa and some in Mandarin so communitarian in bargaining make easier for us. Being Malaysian bargaining like this is not a problem to us.
Went to Saigon Corner where it is air cond and sell modern clothing for ladies.
War Remnants Museum
From here we took the motorbike taxis to visit to War Remnant Museum. Formerly known as the Exhibition House of American War Crimes, the outside museum exhibits some U.S. military hardware like tanks, jets, helicopters.
Inside in the three stories building is where the picture and photograph of the past war is display here. The picture show how the Viet Cong fight the war they never wanted. Many of them suffer ever though the war is over from Agent Orange a kind of most dangerous comical weapon.
One of the gruesome discoveries is the “Tiger cage” prison that use to torture the Viet cong. Very disgusting.
We visited hair salons as advice by the motorbike taxis man. We were told that washing hair here is good and cheap. It is a must do for tourists we so we wash our hair.
Drinking coffee here in Vietnam is a must try. I don’t like coffee very much back home but here we start with coffee on the first day until the last day. I understand that Vietnam is the world’s second largest exporter of coffee after Brazil and cà phê is very popular among the Vietnamese.
The coffee is brewed fresh on the table in a little metal apparatus placed over a cup. It is strong and sweet just how the local like it. The taste is good and quite different from the coffee in Malaysia.
Over all Ho Chi Minh City is a city of it owns and it is an interesting place to visit for tourist with a different experience.

Broadcast Asia 2010 Singapore Expo

Broadcast Asia 2010 Singapore Expo
Broadcast Asia 2010 together with Communicate Asia was held in Singapore recently from 15th June to 18th June 2010 at Singapore Expo. On the same date there was another exhibition SLV Expo held in Marina Bay Sands in downtown. Back in Malaysia Integrated Security and Fire (ISF) show which was held in KLCC Convention Center also on the same date.

SLV Expo 2010 Marina Bay Sands
With 3 shows happen at the same time I was quite busy last week extending the shows and meeting people and the principal. It was a raining days in Singapore last week with unusually heavy in downtown but it does not dampen the visitors to the show.
This year the 15th Broadcast Asia exhibition held over Halls 7 and 8 at Singapore Expo. Broadcast Asia is Asia leading event for the digital multimedia and entertainment industries features an exhibition and conference that bring together production professional, management and suppliers. The show focuses on TV, radio and film production as well as post-production and multi platform streaming.
This year the 3D technologies take the center stage of Broadcast Asia. With global attention on 3D content broadcasting and delivery, we saw many 3D plasma TV, 3D demonstration, HD 3 D camera, machine that convert 2D content to 3D format and so on.
The big lighting manufacturer like ADB and Strand Selecon was not there but was still showcase with the Singapore appointed distributor. Arri lighting and Dexel lighting is also there. LSI Projects from the UK showcase the project management services to broadcast industry.
Next year 2011 Broadcast Asia will move to Suntec Exhibition Center in downtown Singapore. It will be separated from Communicate Asia which will be held in Marina Sands. This separation has been greeted with mixed reaction from exhibitors and visitors. Some says Communicate Asia is the crowd pulling which means there will be fewer crowds in Broadcast Asia next year. Some of exhibitor says it will be better as only the broadcaster and serious group will visit the Broadcast Asia.
Unity College International (U.C.I) New Sound System

Unity College International (U.C.I) which provides international school courses has moved to their new building in Jalan 51A/223, near to Crystal Plaza PJ. Their existing building in Bangunan Sri Kemajuan PKNS is already congested with many students. The new building which houses an Auditorium and a Multipurpose Hall and administration floor and tutorial classes is a 5 storey building.
AV Designs was asked to come out with sound system design and to provide audio visual system for the multipurpose hall and the Auditorium. Together with us and based on the UCI concept to have a clear sound and loaded with bass when need, we have come out with the design that the sound system in Multipurpose Hall will consist of high quality ceiling speakers for source playback and speeches for event like exhibition, student registration and exam hall. But should they would like to use the hall for prom night or dinner with dance nite then they will bring out the mobile sets which is powered Dynacord D-Lite 15” Subwoofer and the 12” satellite speaker sets. The total output power is 2000W enough to rock the hall.
At the 5th Floor Auditorium which have a much higher room space then a permanent mounted EV Klub 15” Loudspeaker and 18” subwoofer was put there. The sound has to be able to use for multimedia presentation and speeches. A Sanyo LCD projector and motorized screen is mounted here.
The auditorium stage lighting consist of a number of profiles spotlight and and general parcan mouted on the fixed rigging. The lighting is enough to spot on the stage and they does want any fancy lighting as the stage will mainly use for seminar and presentation. The controller is by Zero 88 control desk and Zero 88 dimmer pack.
