The Malaysian government is building a new palace Istana Negara in Jalan Duta. This new palace will replace the existing Istana Negara that has been used as palace since 1928. Since this is the first time that the Malaysian government building a new palace they have put more emphasis in the design and architectural.

The new Istana Negara complex when finished will have a floor area of 75,000 sq metres, excluding the parking area, and will be divided into four wings. The new complex will comprise the palace building, supporting buildings, housing for palace staff, police, security office, mini army camp and a double-storey entrance from Jalan Duta and a parking area.

It is due to complete by February 2011.

Istana Negara In Progress

It was reported that the final cost to build the palace is at RM812 mil and Maya Maju Sdn Bhd has been appointed as the main contractor with the contract worth almost RM650 mil, while the building of an elevated highway to the main entrance of the palace is done by Ahmad Zaki Sdn Bhd at about RM130 mil.

There will be lots of architectural lighting and dimming system for the palace building. With new design to reflect Islamic and Malay architectural design the will be different lighting fixture interior and exterior. The design will have a good dimming system to create the moods and energy savings. The proposed dimming is to be centralized and control by 10 button control panel a different location.

It will be interesting to see the effect once the building is completed.

Broadcast Asia 2010 together with Communicate Asia was held in Singapore recently from 15th June to 18th June 2010 at Singapore Expo. On the same date there was another exhibition SLV Expo held in Marina Bay Sands in downtown. Back in Malaysia Integrated Security and Fire (ISF) show which was held in KLCC Convention Center also on the same date.

SLV Expo 2010 Marina Bay Sands

With 3 shows happen at the same time I was quite busy last week extending the shows and meeting people and the principal. It was a raining days in Singapore last week with unusually heavy in downtown but it does not dampen the visitors to the show.

This year the 15th Broadcast Asia exhibition held over Halls 7 and 8 at Singapore Expo. Broadcast Asia is Asia leading event for the digital multimedia and entertainment industries features an exhibition and conference that bring together production professional, management and suppliers. The show focuses on TV, radio and film production as well as post-production and multi platform streaming.

This year the 3D technologies take the center stage of Broadcast Asia. With global attention on 3D content broadcasting and delivery, we saw many 3D plasma TV, 3D demonstration, HD 3 D camera, machine that convert 2D content to 3D format and so on.

The big lighting manufacturer like ADB and Strand Selecon was not there but was still showcase with the Singapore appointed distributor. Arri lighting and Dexel lighting is also there. LSI Projects from the UK showcase the project management services to broadcast industry.

Next year 2011 Broadcast Asia will move to Suntec Exhibition Center in downtown Singapore. It will be separated from Communicate Asia which will be held in Marina Sands. This separation has been greeted with mixed reaction from exhibitors and visitors. Some says Communicate Asia is the crowd pulling which means there will be fewer crowds in Broadcast Asia next year. Some of exhibitor says it will be better as only the broadcaster and serious group will visit the Broadcast Asia.

Unity College International (U.C.I) which provides international school courses has moved to their new building in Jalan 51A/223, near to Crystal Plaza PJ. Their existing building in Bangunan Sri Kemajuan PKNS is already congested with many students. The new building which houses an Auditorium and a Multipurpose Hall and administration floor and tutorial classes is a 5 storey building.

AV Designs was asked to come out with sound system design and to provide audio visual system for the multipurpose hall and the Auditorium. Together with us and based on the UCI concept to have a clear sound and loaded with bass when need, we have come out with the design that the sound system in Multipurpose Hall will consist of high quality ceiling speakers for source playback and speeches for event like exhibition, student registration and exam hall. But should they would like to use the hall for prom night or dinner with dance nite then they will bring out the mobile sets which is powered Dynacord D-Lite 15” Subwoofer and the 12” satellite speaker sets. The total output power is 2000W enough to rock the hall.

Menara Unity Auditorium

At the 5th Floor Auditorium which have a much higher room space then a permanent mounted EV Klub 15” Loudspeaker and 18” subwoofer was put there. The sound has to be able to use for multimedia presentation and speeches. A Sanyo LCD projector and motorized screen is mounted here.

The auditorium stage lighting consist of a number of profiles spotlight and and general parcan mouted on the fixed rigging. The lighting is enough to spot on the stage and they does want any fancy lighting as the stage will mainly use for seminar and presentation. The controller is by Zero 88 control desk and Zero 88 dimmer pack.

Recently Taman Budaya Kuantan in Pahang has upgraded their Lighting Control Desk to the new Zero 88 Jester ML48 a 48 channel desk Lighting Desk with ability to control moving heads. This was to replace the old Strand desk.

Taman Budaya Kuantan is located in front of JKKN building which is on the way to Teluk Chempedak, and once you pass the main traffic lights junction, just follow the signboard to Seri Malaysia Hotel on the left side of the road just before the Vistana Hotel.

Besides the open stage or platform located in front of the JKKN building, there is also an Auditorium inside the building, where the arts, theatres and cultural performances are held.

Taman Budaya Kuantan Pahang

Taman Budaya Kuantan Auditorium

In the Auditorium where the mixtures conventional theatre Lightings and Effect Lightings like DMX controlled LED color Par and Moving Head use in any production require an integrated control desk to control both the conventional lighting and effect lighting. Normally you will find this in a larger desk like in big auditorium or theater. The choice of Zero 88 Jester ML48 control desk was made because of ease to program of the moving head for the effect while storing the scene in sub master or memory.

The Jester ML48 offer users a cost effective solution for control of up to 30 moving lights. The consoles have effects engines, the ability to store palettes or preset focuses and use the comprehensive Zero 88 fixture library.

The JesterML48 desk also offers direct control of 48 dimmer channels. Playback is either via the submasters or through a traditional theatrical cue stack.

Zero 88 Jester ML48 training in progress

A full day Zero 88 Jester ML48 training was conducted on 26/4/2010 to the lighting operator. With the two dedicated lighting operator Mohd Shaiful and Ahmad Shah their learning of the desk was easily pick up and by the end of the training they can program the desk for the next coming shows.

In my last blog “Will Fibre Optics Coming to Home” I was wondering will the fibre optics infrastructure will be available to our Malaysian home. As we know fibre optics has been use widely in the backbone cable infrastructure and some business application but has not been available to home use. Finally the wait is over as we will be able to install new fibre optic link in our home as an option packages offered by Telekom Malaysia in the new Unifi packages launched last Wednesday.

Our normal telephone jack and computer network uses copper cabling to transfer data via electrical pulses. Copper cabling has been a standard for data transmission for many years. The maximum speed is up to 100Mbps.

What is Fibre Optic Cable?
Fibre Optic Cable is long thin strands of very pure glass or plastic about the diameter of a human hair. They are arranged in bundles called optical cables and used to transmit light signals for communications over long distances. It uses light pulses to transmit data and not electrical pulses. Light in a fiber optic cable travels through it by constantly bouncing off the cladding. The speed of transmission can be up to 1000Mbps or 1Gbps.

The advantage of using Fibre Optics is less expensive in cost in long run and able to enjoy 20 times faster in Internet browsing and able to watch high definition data live download without interruption. The ability to transmit voice, data and video (IPTV and Video-On-Demand) in the same cable infrastructure is the future for home technology.

In Malaysia there are currently only two internet service providers that offer the fibre optics broadband packages. Time dotCom offered Time Fibre Broadband a 10Mbps packages launched early this year and Telekom Malaysia with the Unify Fibre Optics Broadband packages offer up to 20Mbps packages launched last Wednesday.

I will definitely upgrade to fibre optics broadband packages once it is available in Puchong.

Last Wednesday on 24 March Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) launched the new high speed broadband called UniFi Broadband. For resident packages will come in 3 prices – RM149, RM199 and RM249 a month.

The three packages are the VIP5, VIP10 and VIP20 and the connections speeds are offered in 5 Megabits per seconds, 10Mbps and 20Mbps packages. Similar packages will be offered to business subscribers for the same speeds at RM199 a month for 5Mbps, RM599 (10Mbps) and RM899 (20Mbps).

That means the up load and download data for VIP5 is 5 Mbps both ways.

The new service comes with a free standard installation worth RM300 and a free standard Customer Premise Equipment packages worth RM800 with a one year guarantee. Currently Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Bangsar will have this access available now but soon more areas will be covered.

The only setback is that the packages is bundled with 8Mbps connection for a set-top-box for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and an initial access to 22 channels as well as Video On Demand library and interactive channels. The packages will also include a Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (Dect) phone as well as a Streamyx Zone ID for wireless web access and a 2GB email box. Telekom Malaysia is trying to penetrate the cable TV with the broadband transmission.

This could be some problem with those who just wanted the high speed broadband for internet access and not with this entire bundle.

Another setback is there will be a download cap on UniFi High Speed Broadband which is calculated on daily basis and if the cap was exceeded then their connections would be throttled down to about 10% of the purchased speed.

UniFi’s 5Mbps service is capped at 60GB of data per month, 10Mbps service at 90GB while the 20Mbps service has a 120GB cap.

Bu the latest good news is Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) on Friday clarified that the monthly data volume cap for its consumer UniFi packages will not be implemented immediately.

Bulbs like incandescent light bulbs are considered less energy efficient and will be obsolete in usage by then.

It will be fully replace by compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent tube and LED lights. This was announced by Power, Green and Water Minister. He said by using more energy efficient bulbs will help reduce energy usage in the country by 1,074 gigawatts a year. The phasing out will be implemented in two phases. The first phase from January to December next year would involve stopping all production , import and sales of 100 watt or higher capacity bulbs.

The second phase from January 2012 till end of 2013 will see an end to the production, import and sales of all other light bulbs. By the LED bulbs will come in heavily as the alternative to incandescent bulbs. A 60W LED bulbs emits the same amount of light as a 250W convention light bulb.

The lighting bills for your outdoor house need not to be high. But trying to save electricity apart switching when not in used is not that difficult. Here are some tips :

1) Install motion-activated sensor lights that turn on when there is movement in the area as to regular outfoor floodlights that are constantly switching on and consuming your electricity.

2) Consider using low voltage lights or even solar lights to provide outdorr accent lighting.

3) Energy saving bulbs are plenty selling in the store and consider buying them will help the bills a bit.

4) LED outdoor lighting is an alternative choice to provide accent lighting around your house.

5) Modern solar lights stay lit for hours and since they have no wires connected them, they are adpatable for your landscape.

Rumors has surface recently that Acoustic & Lighting has signed a deal with Sennheiser Asia to become the Sole Distributor for Sennheiser MI range of microphones for Malaysia. For many years Acoustic & Lighting is just one of the dealers for Sennheiser in Malaysia and there are a few other Sennheiser dealers but now there is only one.

Acoustic & Lighting has been a pioneer in AV distributors in Malaysia and in the recent years with the aggressive marketing they have signed a few strong deal with a few well know brand and now with Sennheiser. To be the sole distributors the company must commit a big number for the sales of microphones and it has to be bigger than total sales by a few dealers last time. This will not be easy. I do not know how much they have promised to the Sennheiser Asia but it is certainly a bigger turn over. With new showroom being renovated dedicated just for Sennheiser products other player will have to buy from him.

With the sudden change of the marketing strategy by the Sennheiser Asia will certainly benefited other microphone brand like AKG, Shure and other microphone brands. They will fill in the gap where other AV company is now without Sennheiser microphone. Their sales will suddenly increases as well since Sennheiser has replace G2 series with a more advance and expensive G3. Last year Sennheiser has launched G3 microphone is Renaissance Hotel KL.

Will these partnership of Sennheiser and Acoustic and Lighting benefit the market? We have to wait and see.

One of my business friends complains about the manner and the language the youngster use now a day. And I tend to agreed with him after he relates what happened to me. He received a few rude applications after he advertised the job vacancy in jobstreet. One of the applicants really triggers his frustration.

This is what he received.

He has no choice but to reply in this way.

I must say that in general the younger generation is different from the time when internet age is still an infant. Fifteen years ago when web site and internet is just for the small group of people, most of us graduate know or has been taught the proper way to apply for a job vacancy. At that time it was through by writing a proper application letter. A proper application letter will tell the different either we are in the successful list or they will throw away the letter.

In this world where the internet, facebook, twitters and sms is worldwide we tend to forget the proper manner and language in everyday basic business use.

It does not help when the government changes the method of teaching or simplify the education to allow more passes in the exam. This does not bring well education to the majority of the students.

No wander my friend is not happy with the current education.
